Reasons to see a lactation consultant BEFORE baby is born (30-36 weeks is ideal)
  • History of breastfeeding problems with another baby
  • History of fertility problems (this pregnancy or past)
  • Breasts haven’t grown in pregnancy
  • Breasts are uneven in size or shape
  • Breasts not “typical” rounded shape- regardless of size
  • Previous breast or chest surgery (breast implants, breast reduction, nipple piercings)
  • History of eating disorder, anxiety and/or depression
  • History of late-onset of first period (14 years and older)
  • Flat or Inverted Nipples
  • Previous poor breastfeeding experience
  • Adoptive Lactation
  • Induced Lactation
  • Relactation (revive lactation weeks or moths after weaning)
Reasons to see a lactation consultant AFTER baby is born
  • Painful breastfeeding (or between feeding sessions)
  • Damaged Nipple Skin (bleeding, bruised, blistered, cracked, chapped, etc)
  • Baby "pops off" easily or frequently
  • Baby nurses for long periods (ex 45 minutes or more)
  • Baby seems hungry after feeding for a while
  • Weight Loss in baby
  • Slow weight gain
  • Baby has Reflux, Irritability, Gassiness
  • Baby has pooping issues that concern you (green, frothy, delayed, etc)
  • Mom just wants reassurance and more information
  • Mom is concerned about having "too much" milk or forceful letdown
  • Mom has questions about herbs or medications (for breastfeeding or other circumstances)
  • Twins or more!
